Domestic services need more attention

Since April 2024, quitt has been a member of the German Domestic Services Council (Deutscher Hauswirtschaftsrat e.V.). The association has called for a week of action from June 10 to 16. The aim is to raise awareness for support in private households, care and nursing of children, parents and grandparents. This sector, which is so important for society and individual families, needs more attention, appreciation and respect.

The domestic services sector is growing

An estimated 4.3 million households already employ a cleaner, nanny, home help or carer. Due to the ageing population, more and more people will be dependent on help at home. For example, it is often possible to bridge a few years until a care home becomes necessary or care at home is even possible. On top, the increase in the proportion of both partners in the working population and the shortage of daycare places in Germany also means that hiring domestic help or childcare is usually crucial for balancing work and family life and is causing the sector to continue to grow. Support in private households is essential!

However, despite its size, diversity and relevance, there is a lack of recognition for the work, fair employment conditions and establishment in society. This is precisely what the “Household-related services” section of the German Domestic Services Council is committed to.
