Here’s the deal
- The Betriebsnummer is an 8-digit number issued by the Federal Employment Agency that uniquely identifies every employer.
- You need it for social security reporting, such as when registering your domestic helper.
- For a mini-job via the Haushaltsscheck, the Minijob-Zentrale obtains the number automatically, so you don't have to do anything.
- You only need to apply for it yourself at the Betriebsnummern-Service for employment subject to social security contributions.
Anyone registering a domestic helper will sooner or later come across the Betriebsnummer. It sounds like bureaucracy for companies, but it applies to every private employer. In most cases, you don't have to deal with it yourself. Here is a quick overview of what it is.
What is the Betriebsnummer?
The Betriebsnummer is an 8-digit number issued by the Bundesagentur für Arbeit (Federal Employment Agency). It uniquely identifies every employer, including private households that employ a helper. All social security reports are assigned to a specific employer through this number.
It should not be confused with the 15-digit Unternehmensnummer, which has been used for statutory accident insurance since 2024. For a private household with a mini-job, that is handled via the Haushaltsscheck and is covered automatically.
Why do I need it?
The Betriebsnummer is a prerequisite for registering your domestic helper for social security. Without it, the registration cannot be processed correctly, as contributions and reports could not otherwise be assigned to an employer. That is why it comes up with every registration, including the Haushaltsscheck.
How do I get a Betriebsnummer?
That depends on the type of employment:
- Mini-job: With the Haushaltsscheck procedure, the Minijob-Zentrale obtains the Betriebsnummer automatically if you don't have one yet. You don't have to apply for anything.
- Employment subject to social security: In this case, you apply for the number yourself, online at the Betriebsnummern-Service of the Bundesagentur für Arbeit. In most cases, you will receive it within a few minutes.
Whether you have a mini-job or a job subject to social security depends on the wage. We explain the difference under Mini-job or midi-job.
