Whether it’s a cleaner, childcare or everyday support in old age – the right route depends on what you’re looking for. A weekly cleaner calls for a different platform than a nanny who looks after your children three days a week.

Personal recommendations
The simplest way is often the best: ask family, friends, neighbours or parent groups. Someone who already works in another household comes with references you can check directly. Especially for childcare or elderly care, where long-term trust matters, a personal recommendation is hard to beat.
Online job portals
If no one in your circle has a tip, online platforms are the next step. Important: there’s a difference between portals that broker contact and those that offer employed staff by the hour. Through a placement platform you get to know the person personally, agree on the hourly wage freely and build a direct employment relationship.
General portals like Ebay Kleinanzeigen, Indeed or the household-jobs board of the Minijob-Zentrale offer a wide selection but little filtering. They work as a supplement when specialised platforms don’t offer enough choice in your region.

What to look for when choosing
Wherever you find someone, clarify a few things first: ask for references and actually call them. Arrange an hour or two of trial work to see whether working styles and expectations match. And discuss working hours, hourly wage, holiday and sick leave concretely – the clearer the agreements, the less friction later.
Found someone? Then comes the registration
Once you’ve found the right person, official registration as a private employer is next. Many households handle this informally – the effort seems high, the contributions opaque. But: legal employment protects both sides. You’re legally covered, your domestic helper has accident insurance and builds up pension entitlements. For most workloads it’s a Minijob, where the contributions are far lower than many assume.
The most common counterargument: “The domestic helper takes home less net.” That’s true on paper. But in return they’re covered if they fall ill or get injured at work.
